You’re probably wondering why you’re seeing this post today, on a Monday, when I usually post Sense8 recaps on Tuesday and Friday. But today is a special day, and that means we have to celebrate. So come on and join me:

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear sensates
Happy birthday to you.

Yes, it is 8 August, and that is the day all our sensates drew their first breaths at the same moment—as it was also on this date last year that Netflix announced Season 2 with nearly all our sensates—Tuppence Middleton, aka Riley, is missing from this video—and a couple of their friends wishing everyone a happy birthday.

To commemorate their birthday I’m doing something special, and this is part of that “special thing”—you’ll just have to wait for the rest.

But now we are in penultimate episode territory, and as dark as things were getting in the last episode, we have a whole ‘nother darkness waiting for us now…

Just Turn the Wheel and the Future Changes

Written by The Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski
Directed by Tom Tykwer

Somewhere Cold and Snowy:
There’s a lone figure walking in the blowing winds, struggling to get up a mountain…

Reykjavik:
Riley (Tuppence Middleton) is in a hospital bed complaining of being cold. Her dead husband Magnus is standing over her begging that she come with him. He fades out to be replaced by Yrsa (Lilja Thorisdottir) who calls her a stupid girl and lets her know she’s going to die here—

San Francisco:
Nomi (Jamie Clayton) come right out of sleep and is instantly awake. She knows Riley is in trouble; she knows they’ll find out what she is; and she knows someone will lobotomize her. They need to help her.

Will (Brian J. Smith) shows up, say they have to know if BPO is being alerted but Nomi can’t do that because all her equipment was confiscated.  She asks if Will can do something, but he tells her he was suspended.  Amanita (Freema Agyeman) watches the conversation between Nomi and Will, never thinking it’s at all unusual.  Just then there’s a knock at the door, and when Nomi and Amanita check the door, it’s Bug.  Seems he’s always on the look out for hot electronic equipment, and damned if he didn’t find the same damn stuff he’d sold them, he suspected foul play.  Nomi tells him they don’t have any money, but he doesn’t care:  he’d still be in prison if it weren’t for her, and as he sees it, they’re in a fight, but they can’t shoot back if they don’t have ammo for their weapons so—handing them a briefcase with their gear—consider yourself reloaded.

Nairobi:
Capheus (Aml Ameen) brings Amondi to Jela’s house and asked him to watch her. He says someone will be by to pick her up later, and it sounds like he might not be doing the pickup. She finally asks him if he’s coming back, and he says Van Damme always comes back—though Jela doesn’t seem so sure. He leaves, for there’s a debt to settle.

Mumbai:
Kala (Tina Desai) and Rajan are walking along the seaside, taking a break from the hospital. Rajan is a bit nervous about the reason why Kala wanted to speak with him in private, and she finally tells him why his father came to visit. He doesn’t seem surprised: he tells her that a lesser woman would have lied and he would have been aware of the lie. This doesn’t set well with Kala, who discovers that Rajan knew his father didn’t want the marriage and wonders if Rajan was simply rebelling. He says that he loves her and that’s why he wants to marry her—and he wants to know if she still wants to marry him. Kala looks a bit worried and concerned, but we don’t get an answer—

RT: Just say it woman!

CF:  She can’t.  And you know why.

San Francisco:
Nomi is on line and back in business. She’s fixed it so that anything going out with Riley’s name on it will look like spam, which should buy them some time. Amanita remarks about how Riley’s father is with her, and Nomi pops in to see him singing Baba O’Riley to his daughter. Neets asks how Riley is doing and Nomi says she’s not alone as we see Will there holding her hand and stroking her hair.

Nairobi:
The Van Damn heads through the city and Capheus drives towards his meeting. He arrives at The Superpower headquarters and the leader comes out to greet him. He thinks Capheus is a smart man, only… there’s no girl. Capheus tells him his quarrel is with him, not Silas or his daughter, and they need to settle up, like men. The leader grabs a machete and asks like he’s going to kill Capheus, but he doesn’t.

Seoul:
Sun has a visitor in the middle of the night: it’s her douchehole brother. He’s happy to see her, which smells like bullshit and she knows it. He’s got some bad news: dad was drinking and getting down on himself and saying he deserved to die, and… dad killed himself by sucking down some monoxide. I’m so sorry this happen, sister— And sister is totally not buying this shit. She sheds a few real tears of sorrow before launching herself over the table and beating the shit out of him—

RT: Just when you think her brother can’t be more of an arsehole he pulls the monoxide card 😦

CF:  I’m really hoping in Season 2 Nomi hacks up evidence to put him away forever and get Sun out of the joint.  This douchehole needs to die.

It takes a couple of guards to pull her out of there and all the way she’s swearing revenge, saying she’s going to get him.  She will do it somehow—maybe though someone else using their computer to dig up dirt on his ass?

Nairobi:
The Superpower leads Capheus back to their machine shop. The leader yell, “Bring out the bitch,” and we see they have Silas (Peter King Nzioki). So the leader is going to give Capheus a choice: cut off Silas’ head, or die. Silas knows these idiots aren’t fucking around—they’ll both die if Capheus doesn’t do this—and tells him to do it quick. All the while this asshole leader is yelling at him—

Seoul:
Sun can’t sleep and she starts pounding on the walls of the detention cell she’s in. Capheus is there with her, for he’s just as upset.

Nairobi:
The Superpower leader is getting tired of his waiting around shit and wants to know what’s the matter. He starts calling him a bitch—

Seoul:
—and Sun isn’t down with assholes saying that. She says call me bitch one more time—and Capheus finishes with “And I will kill you.”

Nairobi:
So the asshole with the gun to Capheus’ head calls him a bitch, and what you expect to happen happens:

With that Sun goes on a rampage and helps Capheus take out all these fucking losers in short order.

And it isn’t long before it’s just Capheus and Silas in the room—with a lot of help from Sun, of course.

Capheus gathers up Silas and they get the hell out of there in the Van Damn.

Berlin:
Wolfgang (Max Riemelt) pulls up in front of the hospital where Felix is being kept and takes out of one Steiner’s goons who are there to watch. He finds the other one asleep, so he go in and starts unstrapping Felix. Looks like a change of venue may be in order.

Mumbai:
Kala returns to the temple where her almost father-in-law was almost killed and finds a small memorial to Rajan’s father set up. It doesn’t take her long to figure out that these people are honoring her for bringing the father to the temple and she freaks. Since she’s really not good at getting her threats on Will does it for her, and the people at the temple are smart to take her warnings. She thanks Will for helping; he’s pretty impressed that he’s in India, and she asks where he is—

Reykjavik:
Will says Chicago but this thoughts are with Riley, and Kala and he are in her room. Will is worried someone’s going to find out what she really is, and Kala asks what will happen after that. Will doesn’t know, but they both probably have good ideas.

Nairobi:
While escaping the rest of The Superpower, Silas thanks Capheus for not handing over Amondi and for saving him. Capheus sort of half-ass blows it off, not telling Silas his real plan for the day. They get stuck in a traffic jam and that gives The Superpower time to catch up and finish the job. It looks pretty shitty for both Silas and him…

Reykjavik:
He pops into Riley room and finds Will and Kala. He tells them he thinks he’s about to die. Will says that ain’t gonna happen—

Nairobi:
Will grabs the first guy sneaking along the bus and blows him away with his own pistol.

This slows up the rest of the gang now that they know Capheus is armed.  He tells Silas to buckle up and decides to go back the way he came, pushing away cars and running over gang members.  This gives him enough space to cut over into the other lane and drive against oncoming traffic—but he’s in a bus, so fuck it.  The leader goes after them on a motorcycle and finds a shortcut, which eventually brings them face-to-face, so to speak.  And with that they decide to play chicken.

Sure, the guy on the bike has a pistol, but dude: Capheus has a motherfucking bus! Too late this asshole realizes that he didn’t hit Capheus with his gun, and the motherfucking bus is still coming. Capheus puts the bus into a slide annnnnd…

Dude, you got bitchslapped by a bus.  If you are still alive tomorrow, you’ll feel lucky if you can walk.

RT: I love the episode still above; he seriously got kicked by Van Damn 😉

CF:  There was one earlier when they were on the highway when Capheus backed into the dude, and it looked like a slow-motion Van Damme kick to the body.  But that seen above–I was laughing my ass off ’cause you knew it wouldn’t end well for the dude on the bike.

Berlin:
Wolfgang drops Felix off at a private clinic and has people look after him. The attending physician wants to know what to call their new patient: Wolfgang says Conan. Is that a first name or last name? Yes.

Nairobi:
Capheus makes it back to Jala’s in the shot up Van Damn and helps Silas inside. Jala is happy to see Capheus; Silas is happy to see Amondi. Mrs. Jala looks worried, because who wants a bloody gangster in their house? Just another of her husband’s motherfuckers who keep coming round.

Reykjavik:
Riley is dreaming about being driven at night along a snow-covered road. The doctors are a bit freaked out by the MRIs of her brain, seeing the same conditions that Nomi had. Riley dreams of being in a car wreck while the doctors and dope her into unconsciousness. Will hears that the doctors have not heard back from the neurologists—

San Francisco:
—and he asks Nomi if she did that. Of course: hacking is easy, it’s what she does. Will asks if she did this as well, making the Australians aware that she was in the country:

(Note:  the date of birth is different here, which means Nomi is likely hacking he hell out of databases somewhere in regards to when she was really born.)

Nomi says she’s an all-access type of girl, and she figured it would by them more time. Will wonders how much they have, how much Riley has, and Jonas (Naveen Andrews) shows up with the answer: none. The problem is Whispers knows about Riley, but Nomi doesn’t know how. It’s easy: Nomi knows about her, Will knows about her—and he knows them both. And Whispers…

Whispers knows Jonas.

Whispers is manipulating Jonas into speaking with Will and he’s playing him. Will doesn’t understand why Whispers doesn’t just go to Iceland and get Riley, and it’s because, Jonas says, he knows Will is thinking about doing the same.

Berlin:
Wolfgang pulls up to the entrance to his uncle’s estate. Kala is in the passenger seat and she doesn’t not like this place. She doesn’t want him to do whatever he is going to do, he could just leave. Why don’t you give us the title shout out, Kala?

Wolfgang can’t do that ‘cause there are some things you don’t change: they are inevitable. She doesn’t want him to go; she knows they’ll kill him. But he must. He knows she can’t understand his world in the same ways he can’t understand hers, but she knows how she feels about him, and figures he feels the same way. He tells her that’s why he’s here, because if he doesn’t do something about his uncle, no one he knows will ever be safe. They kiss—

And then Wolfgang rings the gate open and enters the estate…

Seoul:
She’s in the detention cell with Sun who tells her that she can feel what Kala feels, but that this is what life is: fear, rage, desire, love. You can’t stop feeling your emotions because that means you want to feel death. Kala wants to know what she should do. Sun says she takes everything she feels, everything that matters, she puts it into her fist… and she fights for it.
