We’re at the half-way point of Season 1 of Sense8, and this is by far the biggest change of pace for the season so far. Let’s see why:

Demons

Written by The Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski
Directed by The Wachowskis

Chicago:
Will (Brian J. Smith) is at a sports bar with a lot of other cops for the party he was told to attend. He greets his father and continues inside.

London:
Riley (Tuppence Middleton) is sitting in a pub somewhere in London.

Transitional Moment:
Will walks in and sees Riley: she sees him. This is the moment at the end of the last episode that started to play before Kala’s wedding interruption.

Chicago:
Will stops and starts to say something, and Riley says the same: I was just thinking about you. He sits at the table alone, though it’s obvious he sees her—while in London she sees him sitting next to her in a booth. They share a beer and finally exchange names and occupations.

Riley wonders if they’re going crazy, and that gives Will and idea. He puts his number into her phone and tells him to call her. She calls the number and after about three seconds Will’s phone rings and like that, they’re talking to each other. Just to prove they’re not nuts Will has Diego answer the phone, and he tells will there’s a girl with a weird accent on the other end who sounds hot. So it’s working, and they can hear their own voices on time delay as they bounce off satellites. She wants to know if he’s seen others, and he says that Jonas told him there were eight, and that he was with the woman who shot herself, whom Riley knows is Angelica. She decides to head off to bed.

Seoul:
Sun (Doona Bae) walks into the office as the government people are taking away all the financial records. She seems unnoticed by everyone around her—except for Nomi (Jamie Clayton), who is standing there in the hall looking at her. She finally walks away and heads deeper into the offices.

San Francisco:
Nomi and Amanita (Freema Agyeman) are sifting through the wreckage of their apartment. Nomi’s computer and backups are gone: even her journals were taken. She doesn’t understand why this is happening: she didn’t do anything. But Nomi gets that look her eyes: fuck these guys. She tells Neets they need a place and someone who can keep a secret. Amanita knows shit just got real.

Seoul:
Sun walked down to the lobby of the building and faces the press. She takes full responsibility for the embezzlement and surrenders to police.

London:
Riley returns to the flat and finds Shugs (Frank Dillane) and Bambi (Nicôle Lecky) getting high. Oh, and they have a friend over: Nyx (Joseph Mawle), who brought along a thug to keep him company. After he tells Shugs and Bambi to fuck off he turns to Riley. The conversation is simple: where’s my drugs, where’s my money? She tells him the truth: she dumped the drugs and gave away the money. He’s like, okay… I don’t believe you. And with that the thug bends her over a table and Nyx puts a plastic bag over Riley’s head and tortures her. When he realizes her answers aren’t going to change, he decides to put her down for good—

Chicago:
Will gasps as he fights for air, feeling what Riley feels:

Transitional Moment:
Will begins pushing people away before he starts lashing out. Riley, under his control, gets free of the thug, beats Nyx away, gets the bag off her head, and starts putting the boots to the thug. With both of them finally down, Riley grabs her shit and books, while Will tries to compose himself.

San Francisco:
A cab rolls up on a darkened street and Nomi and Amanita get in. They walk to a house and Aminita rings the doorbell. A woman with glasses answers: it’s Amanita’s mother. They hug and everyone goes inside.

Mumbai:
Kala (Tina Desai) wakes up in bed surrounded by her family and friends who want to know that she’s all right. She learns that Rajan is waiting for her downstairs. Oh, what a fucking joy! She’s so happy she buries her head in the covers.

Berlin:
Wolfgang (Max Riemelt) is still in bed and just starting to walk up when he hears the floorboards creaking. They’re creaking because there’s a strange woman in his room going through his wardrobe.

It’s Kala, and she’s confused as hell why she’s picking up men’s underwear. Wolfgang find himself in her bed in her room, and greets her. She knows who it is: the strange singing man, and he has ruined her life. He didn’t ruin her life: he knows she didn’t want to marry him. She doesn’t know what’s happening, but she thinks the gods are angry with her and they’ve sent a demon. Wolfgang doesn’t know about that, but he does know he wants her. Oh, yeah: she knows he’s a demon now.

Mexico, DF:
Lito (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) is with Hernando (Alfonso Herrera) and Daniela (Eréndira Ibarra) enjoying a wrestling match. Hernando is waxing on about how the wrestlers are a representation of good and evil, and the one in black is a demon, the one who represents what is inside us all, and what we could become. Lito looks away from his friends and finds someone in a wrestling mask staring at him.

Mumbai:
Kala finally comes down to see Rajan, who is eating. She tells him she knows why he’s there: he wants to call off the wedding. On the contrary, he can’t wait to get married! After all, her fainting has meaning, and he can’t wait to tell the story to their children about how their mother saw her wonderful husband at the wedding and fainted right away when she saw him—which makes a better story than, “Mommy looked down and saw some white guy’s dick.” As with everything else in her life, Kala look so happy to hear this news.

RT: At this point I was ready to slug Kala one. Just. Don’t. Marry. Him.

CF:  There’s part of me that wants to scream at the screen, “The fuck is the matter with you?” but then I remember Wolfgang did that already.  What gets me is how fucking oblivious everyone seems to be when they are around her talking about the wedding.  They’re going on about how happy she’ll be and she looks like she’s been constipated for three days and is going to die if she doesn’t go to the bathroom soon.

Nairobi:
Capheus (Aml Ameen) shows up at a swanky county club where Silas (Peter King Nzioki) is playing a few holes. Silas has a job for him: he wants him to take his daughter to a nearby clinic on a regular basis because she has leukemia and needs treatment. Silas has enemies, and he figures no one will see her riding around in that piece of shit bus of Capheus’. He also impressed that he betting not fuck up, either.

Seoul:
Sun is at the preliminary hearing, and the prosecutor wants to put her in jail now and forgo bail because they’re worried she’ll skip the country. Dad and Shithead Brother look on as she’s lead away.

RT: I just. Poor Sun 😦 Her family sucks the worst. Except for maybe Nomi’s mother.

CF:  Shithead Bro would be hitting on Nomi like a motherfucker AND be transphobic at the same time.  It’s like he has The Douchebag Gift or something.  And Mama Cuntface would be like, “What, (that name I will NOT say):  are you gay now?”  You wanna put them both in a car and drive them off a pier.

Chicago:
Will and Diego are having lunch, and his partner is warning Will that people think he’s going crazy. Will doesn’t give a shit.

Nairobi:
Capheus shows up at the Van Damn and tells Jela (Paul Ogola) to send everyone away, the bus has been chartered for the next few days. He tells Jela that Silas have chartered the bus, which put a bit of fear in his friend, even when he’s giving a wad of money for his trouble.

Seoul:
Sun is taken down to holding, stripped, cleaned up, and put in a prison jumpsuit. She’s not shown any courtesies or compassion.

Mexico, DF:
Lito is being interviewed for TV by the same woman who interviewed him days before on the red carpet.

Transitional Moment:
As Sun is being given a medical examination and questionnaire, she and Lito switch back and forth, leading to confusion. It is only when Lito is told to squat over a mirror—

Mexico, DF:
That he finds himself back being interviewed. He laughs it off as if he was still running lines in his head, which the interviewer seems to buy. The interviewer wants to know what it takes to be a great screen lover, and Lito replies—between cuts of Hernando and him making out—that the pleasure of your lover must become your own, but at the same time you need to fill your own desires.

Transition Moment:
While Will works out Lito and Hernando start getting a little frisky with each other while Daniela looks on. Wolfgang is hanging out in a hot tub by himself, relaxing, watching a few women. Lito starts making out with Hernando and Will find Lito kissing him. Lito’s back grinding on Hernando and getting seriously sensual with him while Daniela snaps photos and starts masturbating. Nomi strips down completely and tells Amanita she’s going to make love to her as Lito tells Hernando the same and Nomi begins kissing Hernando, which leads to Lito kissing Amanita, which leads to Will feeling it, and then over to Nomi in the hot tub with Wolfgang before popping up with will as he does sit ups. All of them come together as the switch between the different places—Amanita’s bed, Lito’s bedroom, Will’s workout area, Wolfgang’s hottub—as the four of them get down into a massive cluster orgy while Fatboy Slim’s Demons (the title shout out) plays over the multiple scenes. All of them, save Wolfgang, find themselves reaching incredible orgasms.

RT: This has been probably the most talked about scene in Season 1 of Sense8, and for good reason. The scene is HAWT! *melts*

CF:  The Wachowskis get all the awards for putting together a hot, sensual scene, and THIS right here is about as erotic is it gets.  Hell, I’d have jump in the middle of this.  And you have to give Max Riemelt (Wolfgang) credit for just sit there with a, “Um, I’m just trying to relax, people, don’t mind me,” look on his face the whole time.

Nairobi:
Capheus watches a Van Damme movie as he waits for Amondi. He appears nervous.

San Francisco:
Nomi, Amanita, and her mother are having breakfast. Nomi is trying to figure why her, why her mind. Amanita’s mother teaches a class in evolution, and wonders if there is something more that what they can see happening to her.

Seoul:
Sun is put in a holding cell for the night. For the first time she feels the weight of what’s happening.

San Francisco:
Nomi continues wondering what’s happening to her. Perhaps there’s a drug she can take to control these crazy feelings she’s having. Or is it possible that eventually she won’t feel like “me”. Amanita and she hold hands over this last grim thought.

London:
Riley cries as the sun comes up over the city.

Seoul:
Sun looks alone and bothered in her cell.

Transition Moment:
Sun turns to her left and finds Riley sitting there in the London sunrise. Riley find herself joining Sun in her holding cell. They both thought they were alone, but they aren’t any more. They introduce themselves, and Riley is surprised to learn Sun’s name, because her favorite spot to sit in London has an inscription: “I have conversed with the spiritual sun.”

Riley says she comes there to vape and converse with the sun, and Sun states that she would kill for a smoke. All Riley has is hash, which she shares and which Sun can sort of feel. Riley asks why Sun is in the cell, and she says she feels she has made the biggest mistake of her life.

Nairobi:
Amondi arrives and wants to know why Capheus is watching Van Damme again. He says he’s a source of inspiration, that if are brave and fight, you can make a difference. Amondi feels her father is doing the same thing.

Seoul and London:
Riley and Sun know they are in trouble because of crimes committed by other people, and Riley tells Sun of the Hidden People, the little creatures that live in Iceland. She heard one singing in a cave, and it was the song her mother sang to her when she was small. She was told she was born with a hex and couldn’t stay in Iceland, or bad things would happen to people she loved … and eventually her mother died, for which she blamed herself. Sun’s mother died when she was young and felt it was her fault as well. Riley wants to go home and see her father but she’s afraid. Sun tells her not to be, that she’ll be safer there than here in London. She remarks that she’s going to prison, and Riley tells her not to be afraid, that she’ll be safer there than where she was.

San Francisco:
Nomi watches Amanita washing dishes and goes to her, holds her and kisses her. Neets wants to know why: Nomi said it felt like something she needed to do.

Seoul:
Sun is somewhere at night, in a dark city part surrounded by lights.

Her mother comes to her give comfort, to be proud of her and show her love. But she warns her to be careful … Sun asks why, and her mother tells her that people are afraid of her and will hurt her if they find out— Find out what? And we see it’s not her mother talking to her, it’s Angelica (Daryl Hannah). She says if they find out what she is. And what is that?

The future.

Personal note: I loved, for want of a better term, the cluster fuck. It showed that the sensates are connecting in ways never imagined, and not only can they feel the actions of others, but participate. Brian J. Smith (Will) said that Lana Wachowski believes the sensates are pansexual, giving no thought to sexual orientation or gender identity when it comes to loving someone, and that scene once again showed rather than told that point of view. It was an excellent moment and sexy as hell.

So, we are at the half-way point, and that means there are three weeks of Sense8 recaps remaining. As always, tell us what you think in the comments below.

Sensates:

Tuppence Middleton — Riley Blue (née Gunnarsdóttir), London
Brian J. Smith — Will Gorski, Chicago
Doona Bae — Sun Bak, Seoul
Aml Ameen — Capheus, Nairobi
Max Riemelt — Wolfgang Bogdanow, Berlin
Tina Desai — Kala Dandekar, Mumbai
Miguel Ángel Silvestre — Lito Rodriguez, Mexico DF
Jamie Clayton — Nomi Marks, San Francisco

Others:

Freema Agyeman — Amanita
Alfonso Herrera — Hernando
Eréndira Ibarra — Daniela
Max Mauff — Felix
Paul Ogola — Jela
