‘Vikings Season 4’: Whose Severed Head Is Ragnar Talking To In Episode 7?

Episode 7 (entitled “The Profit and the Loss”) of Vikings Season 4 ended with Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) talking smack to a severed head. But just whose head is it?

After viewing the screener from History Channel several times for episode 7 of Vikings, I still can’t work it out. It doesn’t help that the screener is not in high definition (but I totally get why that is so). But my initial knee-jerk reaction was that it was Floki’s (Gustaf Skarsgard) head Ragnar was babbling to. After all, the lead up to this screen prior sort of suggests it could be Floki. However, would Ragnar kill Floki after just saving him from drowning during the recent raid on Paris? Probably not. Although, if Ragnar is to learn one lesson alone from the failed raid on Paris is that you should never, ever give someone who betrays you a second chance. So, maybe my initial reaction was right.

If I am to guess whose head it is just by looking at it, I would say it was Harbard’s (Kevin Durand) head Ragnar was talking to in episode 7 of Vikings. However, considering Harbard is back in Kattegat banging Ragnar’s wife, it seems highly unlikely his severed head would be here in Paris. Even factoring in that weird sex dream hallucination/vision between Floki, Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland) and Harbard.

On Twitter, some fans suggested the severed head could be Yidu’s (Dianne Doan). And, to be honest, this actually makes a lot of sense. The betel nuts she supplied him have run out, leading to wicked withdrawals. Also, in the past, their relationship has be, at times, quite aggressive on Ragnar’s behalf. If he is suffering withdrawals and also blaming the drug use for the defeat at Paris, maybe he did really snap and take Yidu’s head with him? However, the one thing we can see from the screen capture above is the fact the severed head has a beard. So Yidu is definitely out of the question.

Alternatively, this head could belong to any smaller character in Vikings. Could it be King Harald Finehair’s (although the promo video for episode 8 of Vikings shows Finehair), or Roland’s (who led the attack on the viking camp)? Perhaps Ragnar has taken someone’s head in response to the Seer (John Kavanagh) telling him he will die “on the day the blind man sees him”? Or, is it just some random head Ragnar found on the ground and his crazy has descended so low that he can’t tell the difference between the living and the dead? Another suggestion is that a severed head was seen at the viking camp when the vikings first returned, so it really could just be one of Ragnar’s own he picked up. And we know he has guilt over causing loss of life after he told this to Yidu previously, so it is just as likely to be this head Ragnar was babbling to. However, only tuning into episode 8 of Vikings Season 7 will reveal all.

  1. Definitely not Yidu’s head (because of the beard and all). Could be Floki’s, but I agree it’s probably a random head. But, it would be REALLY cool if it’s ATHELSTON’s head, and that Ragnar brought it along because he wants to be together in Paris with him (morbid, but cool).

  2. i thought it looked like the Viking Stender’s head who escaped Wessex to give Ragnar the news of King Ecberts betrayal in destroying their village. The nose and high hairline look very close.

    Just my guess
