Game of Thrones Season 4 Recap – Episode 5: First of His Name

Sophie Turner stars as Sansa Stark in Episode 5 (entitled 'First of His Name), Season 4 of HBO's Game of Thrones

Where do I start with Episode 5 (entitled First of His Name) of Season 4 of HBO’sGame of Thrones? Because all I can keep thinking about is Sansa’s (Sophie Turner)story this week and how that poor stupid little pretty thing just keeps bouncing from one pot, into the fire and straight back into another frying pan!

Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) gets crowned in Episode 5 (entitled 'First of His Name'), Season 4 of HBO's Game of ThronesBut more on that later. How about I start with Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) getting crowned this week? It seems it’s not really at all about who is king, but who will get to control the poor boy:Margaery (Natalie Dormer) or Cersei (Lena Headey). And, to be honest, I’m pretty sure Cersei wants Sansa returned to the thick of it not because she considers her an accessory to murder, but because she would be so much easier to control than Margaery!

Add into this fine dance for the throne, we have Cersei gearing up for her own wedding – at this rate, we will run out of colours to name all these bloody weddings! Then it’s time for a chat with Oberon (Pedro Pascal) about how her daughter is getting along. But really it’s probably all about Cersei trying to draw some sympathy from Oberon because he is now involved with Tyrion’s (Peter Dinklage) trial.

Emilia Clarke stars as Daenerys Targaryen in Episode 5 (entitled 'First of His Name'), Season 4 of HBO's Game of ThronesDaenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) is confronted with a dilemma. Now that King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) is dead, she should really head on over to Westeros and get her butt seated in that uncomfortable oldiron throne. But it seems all the freeing of slaves she has been doing is not working out so well and she will probably have to sort that mess out before setting her eyes back on the throne – can anyone say ‘long journey just got longer‘ *yawn*.

This is the episode when we realise Locke (Noah Taylor) is nothing but a shitty bastard! And here I was all fanning over him because he is an Aussie actor and all. So he sneaks over to Craster’s Keep and finds where Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright)and his merry crew are holed up then returns and tells Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) to keep away from that particular spot (on account of the ‘hounds’ there) so he can come in during the takeover and score himself some Stark leverage. He also tells them there are plenty less men there than there really is, so when they all return to take over the Keep, it gets a bit hairier than they first thought. Luckily Bran wargs into Hodor (Kristian Nairn) and Locke ends up with a broken neck for his troubles. So we’re all getting excited that Bran and Jon are going to be reunited. AND THEN IT DOESN’T HAPPEN. *sigh* Guess they all have their own plans and all that shit to be done before there can be any family reunions.

Next there is some minor stuff between Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) and Pod (Daniel Portman). Also there is some stuff between Arya (Maisie Williams) and theHound (Rory McCann) which results in the Hound finding out he has made it onto Arya’s shitkicking list.

Now, let’s settle in and have nice look at just how fucked up Sansa’s family really is!

Lysa (Kate Dickie) gets cosy with her creepy son, Robin (Lino Facioli) in Episode 5 (entitled 'First of His Name), Season 4 of HBO's Game of ThronesFirst, we have Littlefinger (Aiden Gillen) bringing Sansa ‘home’ to her Aunty Lysa’s (Kate Dickie). Seems she is still developing a perverse relationship with her son. Is it just me, or is that kid gonna grow up worse than Joffrey?

Next we find out that Lysa is still batshit crazy and confessing that she is the one who killed her husband, King Jon(Sansa is no longer in the room by this stage). She also confesses, but is cut short by Littlefinger that she is doing everything at his instruction. We know Littlefinger has a thing for Lysa’s sister, but it turns out any old relative will do in his quest to have Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) and he ends up marrying Lysa there and then just to shut her up. Oh my, how the plot thickens…

After all this, Lysa then accuses Sansa of having her wicked way with Littlefinger. Right-o then… Never assume you have seen the full spectrum of crazy with Lysa is about all I can take away from this scene. Sansa seems just about ready to sneak right back out of that creepy castle and take her chances on the open road – or with the Lannisters – rather than with her own flesh and blood. And I certainly don’t think anyone would blame her!

WTF moments

  • Margaery not being sure what she will have to call Cersei once she is wed to Tommen and Cersei is wed to Margaery’s brother, Loras (Finn Jones). Bet it’s a common topic of conversation around the Lannister table, so Cersei should have  an answer for that one…
  • Cersei sending a ship as a present for her daughter. Did anyone else think ‘Trojan horse‘ when Cersei offered it to Oberson?Lysa (Kate Dickie) and Littlefinger (Aiden Gillen) get their jiggy on in Episode 5 (entitled 'First of His Name'), Season 4 of HBO's Game of Thrones
  • Lysa and Littlefinger getting their jiggy on. No one wants to see that!
  • The level of corruption Littlefinger is involved in. It was gasp after gasp listening to Littlefinger and Lysa chat.
  • Lysa deciding that Sansa should marry her son, Robin (Lino Facioli). Right then, because the kid isn’t young and creepy enough without having to marry his cousin…
