The Walking Dead Season 4 Recap – Episode 4: Indifference

Indifference

So basically, Season 4, Episode 4 (entitled Indifference) of AMC’s The Walking Dead is the one in which Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) fucks the fuck up!

So this is what went down:

This is one of those episodes like the later ones in Season 3, where I absolutely fell in love with the story telling. There are basically two story lines: Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and his crew reach the Veterinary College and the one I referenced above.

Daryl and his crew finally avoiding the super horde and making to the college is very awesome and the sub-plot of the alcoholic Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard Jr.) is a commendable one, however it is overshadowed by Rick and Carol’s (Melissa McBride)one, so I will get it out of the way first.

So, somehow, they have circumnavigated the horde of walkers (of which the prison crew are still oblivious too) and reached the college. It seems they are on easy street at first (thanks to finding and fixing a new set of wheels). The building is quiet and they have plenty of time to collect all the medication and supplies they need for the super flu back at Old MacPrison’s farm.

For some reason though, they don’t seem to leave the way they entered the building and chose the zombie intensive exit course. Both Bob and Tyreese (Chad Coleman) battle it out during this entire episode for who will be the last black man standing (as per the usualWalking Dead procedure of having only one token person from any given minority group at a time on the show).

Both manage to survive against the overwhelming odds though – especially when Daryl discovers that Bob decides to take alcohol instead of live saving medications! So after a short, precarious dance between them on the top of a roof (with nothing but angry walkers below), Daryl lets Bob off the hook but spends the rest of the trip home sulking – don’t blame him one little bit. What I want to know is how the fuck does an alcoholic survive this long after the zombie apocalypse???

Now, Daryl, at the start of the episode, finds a pretty piece of jade. I’m hoping he hasn’t put it aside for Carol because she is a little predisposed at the end of Episode 4 since…

Carol and Rick decide to go on a mission to find medication because Daryl and his gang haven’t returned yet. Now, obviously Carol is smarter than me because I spent half the episode wondering why the fuck she kept justifying her behaviour to Rick (of killing Karen (Melissa Ponzio) and David (Brandon Carroll) in an attempt to prevent the spread of the flu).

In hindsight, I realised she knew from the very start what was about to go down, otherwise she wouldn’t have been saying what she did to Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino) at the start.

But, anyway, Carol goes with Rick and they find a nice little neighbourhood to skirt for drugs. Besides spending the whole time talking between the lines to each other, they manage to find a couple of non-walkers – one of whom has a dislocated shoulder. Carol uses her expertise (based on years of being a domestic abuse victim) to put the man’s shoulder back in.

Rick asks them his three magic questions and hi-ho! they are ready to come back to Old MacPrison’s farm with them. Unfortunately, the woman doesn’t make it and the man never returns to the rendezvous point in time.

But that’s okay because Carol needs a car now…

…since Rick is a dumbarse and kicks her out of their group!

Yep, fucktarded Rick is happy to slaughter healthy piglets so they don’t get the flu. He’ll kill his best mate and turn a blind eye to his son shooting his mum, but apparently Carol cannot be just as vicious in aid of the greater good.

Rick, hypocrite much?

Yeah, look, Carol probably shouldn’t have killed Karen and David so quickly, since they were in solitary and all, but I can totally see her view point. How many times are we told by governments, the army, etc (okay, mainly in movies and apocalyptic novels, but still…) that they had to sacrifice the one to save the many? Carol, who is someone who has risen above her oppressed life, has become the sort of person who will do anything to protect the people who have her back.

And once more she is overruled by a man.

But does Carol go all cry baby? Oh HELL NO! She packs up her new car and takes off.

And how PISSED will Daryl be when he realises what’s gone down while he was away?

On a side note also, what the hell is Rick going to tell everyone when he returns without her?

‘Sorry guys, Carol got eaten by walkers…’ No, Rick, that would make you a hypocrite!

‘Sorry guys, Carol killed Karen and David so I had to let her go…’ No, Rick, now Carol can’t ever return unless Tyreese is dead.

Wonder if Carol will have a run in with the Governor (David Morrissey) while she’s out on her lonesome? I hope so, because we all know who would win in that fight!
