American Horror Story Asylum Recap – Episode 8: Unholy Night

Well, I’ve been a bit slack as far as FX’s American Horror Story: Asylum recapsgoes, so here is one to tide you over for a while!

Killer Santa (Ian McShane) in Episode 8 of FX's American Horror Story: Asylum

Unholy Night

This episode opens with a disturbing flashback to a killer Santa (Ian McShane) on the loose. Surprise  surprise, he ends up committed to Briarcliff and a crucial player in the battle between good and evil in Episode 8: Unholy Night. Christmas is the theme (of course) this week, and we find crazy evil (possibly good?) Sister Mary Eunice (Lily Rabe) decorating the tree with all sorts of asylum weirdness. The Monsignor (Joseph Fiennes) seems to think it is a brilliant showcase.

The kindly security guard is feeling mighty bad for killing Grace (Lizzie Brochere) in last week’s episode – which of course makes him the loaded cannon that has to die. His fate at first seems averted when Dr. Arden (James Cromwell) discourages him from notifying the police. While the same doctor is disposing of Grace’s body down the Death Tunnel, he encounters strange lights and the magical disappearance of Grace.

And so the plot thickens.

Dr. Arden (James Cromwell) in Episode 8 of FX's American Horror Story: Asylum

There is a whole heap of is he or isn’t he Team Sister Mary Eunice for Dr. Arden this week. At first he gives the dear sister a necklace which has come from a less than reputable place. When he tells the good (?) sister the story of how the owner would swallow it repeatedly during the war rather than have it stolen, he expects her to be repulsed by the story. When she revels in it, you think the doc is anti-Eunice. Then Sister Eunice gives the doctor an ultimatum and you suddenly find him siding with Sister Jude (Jessica Lange). Of course, Sister Jude has been thrown out of Briarcliff for good after an extended monologue goes wrong (who would have guessed) and Sister Eunice escapes rather than get killed. So now you are thinking that Dr. Arden is on the side of good and trying to bring down the hussy that has replaced the virtuous Sister Eunice.

Dr. Thredson (Zachary Quinto) surprises Lana (Sarah Paulson) in Episode 8 of FX's American Horror Story: Asylum

Meanwhile, Lana (Sarah Paulson) is still stuck in Briarcliff and beginning to question whether Sister Eunice has told anyone she is there. This is solidified when Dr. Thredson (Zachary Quinto) confronts her while she is trying to make a phone call. Enter the second monologue of the episode. Dr. Thredson is mighty pissed that he had to destroy all of his Bloody Face memorabilia and threatens to use Lana’s fine skin as the replacement. Kit (Evan Peters) steps in and saves the day by bludgeoning him over the head and knocking him out. The pair plan their escape and Lana admits to Kit that Dr. Thredson is Bloody Face.

Now things get interesting when Sister Eunice starts to use Killer Santa as her means to get a few loose ends tied up. Needless to say the security guard finally dies (although not at the hands of Killer Santa, who turns out to be VERY impressed with Sister Eunice’s handy work).

Dr. Arden smuggles Sister Jude into Briarcliff who plans to perform an exorcism onSister Mary Eunice. This is when we find out that he is absolutely batting for Team Sister Evil Eunice and Sister Jude ends up locked up with Killer Santa. He has a bone to pick with Jude and canes her as punishment for leaving him to rot after he ruined the Christmas of 1963 when he went mad and killed some patients. Sister Jude manages to attack Killer Santa with a razor blade.
